The Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative (AAQI) celebrates another milestone in the fight against Alzheimer’s with our 15,000th donated Priority: Alzheimer’s Quilt! “And The Greatest of These Is Love” (8.5″ x 10.75″) was made and donated by Michele Bilyeu of Salem, Oregon.
Michele is part of the “$1,000 Promise”program. Participants promise to donate as many quilts as it takes to raise $1,000 for the AAQI. She has met that goal and gone on to raise more than $3,000.
Trying to squeeze in as many quilts as she can before the August 1st deadline, Michele has just registered this, her 75th quilt!
This is the Artist Statement that accompanies quilt #15,000:
My mother is nearing the end of eight long years of battling Alzheimer’s disease. Each of us takes turns living with her and caring for her every need in our childhood home in Alaska. We face each new day with faith, with hope, and with endlessly giving of ourselves. But above all else, we face each new day with love.
“Making and donating these quilts for AAQI has been a true labor of love for me,” said Michele. “I have now taken care of my mother for a combined total of three years out of the past 10 years and that, combined with making of my AAQI quilts and earning money for a cure for Alzheimer’s, have been the most meaningful and important things I could have possibly have done to show my deep love for my mother, and mys deepest and most driving hope for a cure for this terrible, terrible disease.”
“And the Greatest of These Is Love” will be auctioned in the August online auction. Please tell your friends.
The AAQI thanks all of its supporters for their creativity, generosity, and financial support. Together we have raised more than $916,000 for Alzheimer’s research since 2006.
